In 2004, a team of over 200 from Times Square Church traveled to Lusaka, Zambia to hold evangelistic rallies and humanitarian and medical outreaches. One of the outreach teams found out that thousands of children lived in the streets around the central market in Lusaka. On the last night of the outreaches, the team went out into the night to feed the street children. No one was prepared for what they witnessed. Walking through the deserted market with their flashlights, they saw hundreds of children living under tables and in the gutters that surrounded the market. No home, no food and no hope.
One of the local pastors that helped with the outreach was burdened with the needs of the street children. He began to feed the children himself and invite them to his church.
A daily feeding program now exists from those early outreaches. Volunteers working with Pastor Reuben take hot food into the streets of Lusaka three times a week and feed over 700 street children.
The program purchased property and a home for street children was established called Kakabalika. Thirty former street kids are now living at Kakabalika and are fed three times a day. The vision for Kakabalika is to develop a commercial farm where the youth can not only feed themselves but learn to farm and produce food to feed thousands more.
ChildCry funds provide the food for Kakabalika and the daily feeding program to the 700 street children in Lusaka. |
