In Zacapa, Guatemala, a group of 17-25 year old native Indians come down from the mountains each week to attend a trade school run by local missionaries. In the past these students would have only received schooling up to sixth grade, after which they would return to their homes in the mountains to work the land as their families have for generations. They share this land with their siblings, all of whom struggle to survive as they support their own families and children. The opportunity to learn a trade gives great future to these young people, opening up new possibilities for life.
ChildCry is currently providing financial support to feed the students in Zacapa three meals a day. The children are fed their native food such as beans, rice and tortillas and are also introduced to other types of food: pasta, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and pizza. Meat, a rare treat, is also worked in to their diets as can be afforded.
