As one of the oldest civilizations in the world, Egypt has been a safe haven for refugees throughout the millennia. Many of those refugees today are from the South Sudan where political, religious, and economic factors have forced these displaced persons to seek asylum within Egypt's borders. Many of these refugees have settled in the poorest areas in the city of Cairo. Children pay the biggest cost when a family is forced to seek shelter in another land. There are a few refugee schools in Cairo serving almost 3,500 Sudanese refugee children. It is in the context of these schools that we seek to reach our goal for 2008: to provide these 3,500 kids between the ages of 5 and 18 with healthy nourishment and an education to give them hope for the future.
